Clare Oliver was just 26 when she was diagnosed with an aggressive melanoma that was almost sure to take her life. This was a result of prolonged and excessive use of 'sun beds', or solariums. She spent her final weeks speaking out against utilising these methods of suntanning, and she prayed that women and teens would listen, as she did not want her death to be in vain. Clare died on the 13th of September.
For me, this truly brought to life how vain and superficial people can be (not Clare). Many women have commented and written in to newspapers, magazines and talked on the radio about how this has really opened their eyes to the apparent risks associated with solariums.
I am amazed (in a perverse way) and shamed that a life must be wasted before people realised what a petty thing skin colour is to worry about. I sometimes receive comments regarding my skin tone, and the only reason I say thanks is out of sheer politeness. I hate it when people say that.
Those who find pleasure in such trivial pursuits obviously have nothing to do with their time. They become victims of their own doing, influenced by those around them and the dire need to fit in.
All the best to them.
